Chris BEAN (IE)

Scientist in Residency with Oswaldo MACIÁ & Siobhán McDONALD

Biography

Chris Bean (IE) is Senior Professor and Head of Geophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. His research interests cover the quantification of ocean wave generated ambient microseism noise, ocean wave parameter estimation from microseisms, temporal monitoring of water column and near seafloor properties using time-lapse ambient noise seismo-acoustics. He has also published widely on micro-seismicity associated with the failure of weak materials, especially on volcanoes.

Why should art and science work together?

"Often scientists seek to work with artists as a way of merely promoting their scientific work. This misses the point as you cannot start a meaningful collaboration from this perspective. It must be two-way.My work with artists in the past has changed my perspectives on the possibilities of my own work. Apparently simple but piercing questions about the scientific work bring one beyond the realm of scientific ‘fact’ into a space where strict causal connectivities may be weak, but emotional connections are strong.  I cannot speak for the artist’s experience, but it seems to me that exposure to previously unrecognized scientific associations opens up new worlds for interpretation. In terms of the specifics of this project – as I mention above my view is that the environment-related SDGs cannot be met without a new world view. This means that we need science-derived stories interwoven with the arts that can speak to people beyond the cerebral level. We need co-created arts-science hybrids."
