Residencies

Our Residency program offers an opportunity for Artists to invite Scientists to their studios. Very often the opposite is the truth, Scientists welcome creatives in their labs. Our program is using a reversal model, inviting scientist to discover the universe of the Artists.

STUDIOTOPIA is a creative journey addressing sustainable development across Europe through the converging views of art and science. This initiative aims to increase collaborations between cultural and research institutions, academia, innovation centres, creatives and European citizens.

In the course of almost two years, STUDIOTOPIA will offer 13 artists and 13 scientists a unique opportunity to collaborate together for a duration of seventeen months. Our residency programme aims to encourage scientists to exchange ideas, knowledge and methodologies with International visual artists while visiting their studios.

Results, developed concepts, research material or artworks generated during STUDIOTOPIA residencies will be exhibited in partnering venues across Europe between 2021-2022. Residency aims to create opportunities for artists and scientists to share their expertise with wide international audiences, curators, art specialists and researchers.

BLOG

What to expect from this Residency-blog?

This blog brings you weekly updates on the STUDIOTOPIA Art&Science residencies with short posts written by our artists and scientists. Here they will share the evolution of their ongoing projects, [virtually] inviting you to their labs and studios.

Zoetropic Centrifuge

Zoetropic Centrifuge

Zoetropic Centrifuge is a collaborative project developed by artist Christiaan Zwanikken (NL) together with scientists Emmanuel Grimaud (FR) and DM Hoyt (US) as part of the STUDIOTOPIA Art & Science Residency program hosted by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Sensing the Living, Promoting the Perception of Plants

Sensing the Living, Promoting the Perception of Plants is a project co-developed by the artist Alexandra Pirici and the scientist Paco Calvo as part of the Studiotopia Art&Science Residence programme hosted by Cluj Cultural Centre. Their collaboration investigates human perception and creates awareness about plants as living organisms by using the “naked eye” observation process.

Palaeoplasticene

Palaeoplasticene

Palaeoplasticene is a project co-developed by the artist Kat Austen and the scientists Indrė Žliobaitė and Laurence Gill. Together, they collaborate as part of the Studiotopia Art&Science Residence programme hosted by Ars Electronica. Recent research has shown the presence of microplastics at the outskirts of human reach, yet ecosystems are already adapting to this new materiality with microorganisms evolving to feed on plastic. This project proposes to "replay the tape of the history of life on Earth" and add plastics : what would have happenned if plastic had been produced in prehistory? How would it have interacted with other long-lived materials such as bone and stone?

Beneath the earth and beyond the rocks

Beneath the earth and beyond the rocks

Beneath the earth and beyond the rocks is the project co-developed by the Irish artist Siobhán McDonald and the Irish scientist Professor Chris Bean as part of the Studiotopia Art&Science Residence programme hosted by GLUON. This project seeks to explore how human activities affect frequencies within the Critical Zone, a thin area between the soil and the rocks where all systems connect. It opens a dialogue to multiple explorations of the slow workings of geological processes found deep in the Earth surface: soil, skin, minerals and sounds In a delicate enquiry using drawing, sound and film Siobhán is looking at processes in the earth, such as the melting of the glaciers into the water cycle – which we as humans accelerate through our existence on the planet.

Marine Caves and Benthic Terrazzo: Fossilization in the home and the markings on the cave walls

Marine Caves and Benthic Terrazzo: Fossilization in the home and the markings on the cave walls

The collaboration between the artist team Hypercomf and the marine biologist Markos Digenis investigates and communicates about the problematics of marine ecosystem preservation. They are currently working on the marine cave ecosystems of Chania, Crete and on the development of a sustainable floor design prototype made of marine plastic waste. The name of the project was inspired by the Venetian “terrazzo”, a mosaic technique which has also been widely used in Greece in the past decades, mostly for apartment building and industrial/storage space floors.

Consciousness

Consciousness

The Colombian artist Oswaldo Maciá and scientists Chris Bean and Emilia Leszkowicz are the residents of the STUDIOTOPIA Art&Science Residency hosted by LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk. Together they work around the glossary of words, and investigate sustainable development through notions of knowledge and perception.

Feeding the Algorithm

Feeding the Algorithm

Artist Maja Smrekar writes about the most recent chapter of her ongoing artistic research project !brute_force, which she is currently further developing in collaboration with scientist Jonas Jørgensen. This art-and-science research focuses on the human-with-animal-with-technology coexistence in a state of joint physical activity.

The story of packaging started with eating, from Egyptians' clay pots to Kellogs’ corn flakes
